Job Description

Provides Clinical Services and Protocols

Maintains clinical expertise and competency to deliver quality health care.

Maintains proficiency with the electronic health record system.

Provides direct patient care as scheduled to meet the needs of GNHC and its obstetrical and gynecological patients.

Examines diagnoses, treats and/or refers patients assigned to physician’s panel, prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to patients’ conditions.

Refers patients for appropriate specialty care services, lab and imaging and any other ancillaryservices that areappropriate for patient’s management and care. Reviews all lab and x-ray reports for patients under his/her careon a timely basis and makes medical management decisions appropriately. 

Follows appropriate standards of care for each patient.

Provides continuity of care to GNHC patients on his or her patient panel and other patients as assigned.

Participates in after-hours clinical responsibilities as scheduled.

Maintains a problem oriented health record for each patient seen in accordance with GNHC’s established Clinical Records and Health Information policies and procedures. 

Ensures that patient and family/significant others are educated about diagnosis and the plan of care. Acts as a resource for facilitating communication when necessary.

Participates in specified health promotion, education and/or prevention programs as needed.

Attends meetings, as scheduled.

Develops, implements and evaluates clinical practice protocols in collaboration with the clinical staff, facilitating the transition to evidence based practice.

  1. Provides Clinical Oversight

Assumes responsibility/accountability for delegating, directing, and supervising patient care activities. Trains, mentors and supervises the clinical support staff engaged in activities and procedures, as appropriate.

Participates in quality improvement and risk management programs.

Oversees Peer Review activities.

Participates in the review and development of patient care policies, including health maintenance schedules and continuity of care.

Participates in the review and development of templates, protocols and standing orders.

Implements the plans, procedures and protocols for the medical team.

Serves as a resource and positive, proactive leader for the clinic locations.

Accepts responsibility for remaining current with medical and health care trends and information that impact the practice areas of the clinics.

Leads the health care team in identifying, evaluating, and prioritizing patient and family needs to develop a plan of care.

Participates in the evaluation of products, procedures, and patient care standards.

Strategic Development and Leadership

Responsible for provider engagement strategies including promoting programs that enhance provider satisfaction

Assist in the development of strategic planning, budgeting, management and goal setting.

Work with providers to improve quality and efficiency

Conduct meetings with providers, as needed.

Facilitate, motivate, and coach clinic staff

Regularly attends all relevant clinic meetings, administrative team meetings and board meetings, when requested.

Provides leadership and vision in the development of clinical guidelines and care pathways.


Participates in annual operating and capital budget process providing input regarding budgets of clinical affairs, clinical quality, and program and facility development.

Patient Safety

Drives the development of a culture of patient safety.

Performs other related duties.



Current knowledge of issues related to health clinics, including JCAHO, legal issues, Medicaid and other reimbursements.

Excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing.  Able to articulate GNHC’s vision and mission.

Knowledge of advanced principles of health promotion, prevention and motivation.

Knowledge of protocols in general and an ability to quickly gain specific knowledge of the GNHC’s current operational protocols


Skills and Abilities

Ability to document, with clarity, all information relevant to a patient’s medical conditions

Ability to use office equipment including but not limited to computers, fax machines, telephones and copiers

Demonstrated success in leading providers to greater efficiency while improving quality, superior interpersonal skills and financial aptitude.

Demonstrated skills in quality improvement development, motivational leadership in provider staff and ability to conduct meetings effectively.

Demonstrate abilities with strategic planning, budgeting, management and goal setting.

High ethical standards and professionalism.

Protects Organization’s values by keeping information confidential.

Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude

Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices

Ability to work well with others and maintain professional courtesy at all times.

Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making

Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. 

Requires frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

Ability to work with a moderate noise level in the work environment is required.


Education & Experience

MD or DO with Board Certification, along with significant management training.

Must be able to maintain board certification.

Successful completion of an ACGME or AOA accredited residency in a primary care specialty.

Must have at least seven (7) years of practice experience along with five (5) years of senior management experience in a health care setting is preferred.

Current unrestricted license from the Texas Medical Board to practice as a physician in the State of Texas.

Annual continuing medical education as required by Board specialty and licensure in the State of Texas.

Must be registered and have current DEA, DPS certificates.

Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Healthcare Professionals Certification.

Spanish speaking and writing preferred.
